University of Tartu

University of Tartu (est. 1632) is the oldest research university of Estonia that leads in several subjects including bioinformatics, molecular biology, and medical sciences. This makes University of Tartu a best choice for several interdisciplinary areas, especially in the intersection of the IT, molecular biology and medical sciences.

Jaak Vilo, PhD, heads the bioinformatics and data mining group BIIT. The main research areas of the group are the analysis of gene expression data (functional genomics), sequence motif discovery, and software systems development for establishing and maintaining research databases.

Role of the University of Tartu team in the COBRED project is to establish the central databases of patient case report forms (eCRF), the associated laboratory sample tracking and biomarker data sets (mRNA, proteomics and metabolomics), as well as perform the mining of the collected data.
